Fur & Burrs & Mats…Oh My!

Spending Sundays at the local wellness clinics, you tend to meet the most patient and kind people awaiting their time with the veterinarian. There is a lighthearted nature that comes with taking photographs; a polite asking if I can take a picture or two, and then gentle introductions. It was at the last clinic that I met a big & sweet dog named Tomas and his concerned family.

Tomas’ guardian was holding him carefully. She looked at me with gentle eyes and looked at his fur, which was matted to his skin. “He does not like to be brushed ~ It’s a difficult task”, she said quietly.OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

His family finally gave up trying to brush him after his fur became entrenched in lumps and then they came to us for assistance.

We were so happy that they did; so grateful that they cared enough for Tomas to wait for hours in the hot sun while volunteers shaved and cut out his mats.OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

After some time, we realized that Tomas was not so big after all! And once the shaved fur and burrs and mats were almost gone, we couldn’t help but feel in our hearts that these clinics truly make a difference in the lives of each animal we reach.

Tomas seemed so much happier with his lighter coat!

We were also so grateful that we could borrow clippers to complete the task and to ensure Tomas would leave feOLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAeling much better!

We then helped his family learn how to start over with gentle brush strokes to keeOLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAp his fur free & flowing. We also asked them to come back, if Tomas needed to be shaved again! Tomas’ family had the biggest smiles in their eyes when they saw how happy Tomas felt & understood what needed to be done in the future to prevent this from happening again.

After this clinic was over, Pat Lang ~ a dedicated animal hero ~ donated a new set of clippers and blades to CWOB…We are SO grateful as we do see dogs like this at almost every clinic. Thank you, Pat!! We sure appreciate your support!
